Caracol is Located on the western edge of the Maya Mountain within the Chiquibul Forest Reserve, It sits on a hight plateau some 500m above sea level.The site was first discoverd by a logger looking for Mahogany when he came across this ancient site.Caracol displayes a classic rain forest and jungle vegetation, home to a wide variety of flora and fauna.Caracol includes all level of maya society from poor farmers to powerful elites. At Caracol you can find the largest maya man made stucture known as "Ca'nna"meening "sky Palace"that rises some 43meter above the B Group plaza.
Caracol Maya Site and Nature hike, is an all day tour, departing San Ignacio at 7am and returing back in San Ignacio at 5pm.This tour takes you through two different types of ecosystem,a pine forest and into a sub-tropical rain forest. drive time from San ingnacio town to Caracol Arechaeological site takes approximately 2hrs and 1/2, driving through two mayan commmunities, Crysto Rey and San Antonio Villages.On the way back from Caracol we also take a tour of the Rio Fro Cave with a 65ft Arch entrance, discoved in 1920's. we then move on to Rio On Pools for a relaxing and refreshing swim at severals cascading small pools and a 5ft back massage water fall, while enjoying the beautiful scenery.
