Description

. When you arrive to Split, you just can't miss its green guardian, hill overlooking the old town and harbour. This is Marjan (pron. Mahryahn). It's the biggest natural recreational area in Split, with endless hiking, biking, climbing, jogging, swimming and walking possibilities. However, for centuries Marjan had been also a spiritual refuge for Split citizens, and since the Middle Age a string of small churches had been erected on its slopes, and spots hidden in the pinewood. This is what we are going to discover on our tour.

Tour begins in front of the monastery and church of Saint Francis at the waterfront, often called "Dalmatian Pantheon" for number of prominent figures buried in its cloister. From there we will walk uphill through one of the oldest and the most picturesque neighbourhoods of Split, Veli Varoš. It's narrow stone-paved streets and houses witness centuries of life. Our first stop will be the viewing point, with the old Jewish cemetery founded in 1573, with one of the most spectacular views on our city. Route continues through the woods, to churches of Saint Nicholas, Saint Jerome and its hermits' caves, or Our Lady of Bethlehem, known for its centuries-old Christmas midnight mass held at 4pm every December 24. On our way you will enjoy natural beauties of the hill, and as a dedicated Marjan enthusiast I will take you through all the hidden paths. Main goal is to reach Marjan's summit Telegrin on 180 meters above the see level which will give you a full round view on whole Split area and nearby islands. We will then walk to Bene cove, with remains of Saint Benedict church and recreational zone with a shady beach and pleasant cafe by the sea. We will return to town again with a walk through the woods, and again through Veli Varoš and its hidden gem, miniature church of Saint Mikula (Nicholas in local dialect). On our way we will learn about local plants, included some eatible like wild asparagus (grown only in springtime).

All walking and hiking paths are suitable even for less fit people, but proper walking shoes is desirable. Tour is also available on bicycles, with bike-rental not included in price. Again, as a dedicated ciclyst, I am familiar with all on and off road tracks.
