                                   Get a first look at Jerusalem as we come into the holy city.

                                   Rest, unpack, etc.

Day 2 – Jerusalem

 

9:00am                       Jerusalem Old City Tour

We will explore several “can’t miss” highlights that help us to understand the story of Jerusalem and of the Jewish people over the last 3,000 years, including sites from First Temple Period up through modern times. 

 

12:00 pm                    Lunch in the Old City

 

1:00 pm                      Davidson Center/Southern Wall Excavations

                                   What did Jewish Pilgrims traveling to Jerusalem 2,000 years ago, when

the Second Temple still stood, see and do?  This archaeological park is the

best place in the entire country to answer those questions. 

 

2:30 pm                      Western Wall Tunnels

Walk along the entire length of the Western Wall, most of which is underneath the current street level.  In the process, we will arrive at the closest spot we can get to the Holy of Holies without being on the Temple Mount.    

 

4:00 pm                      Return to Hotel to relax and clean up for Dinner

 

6:00 pm                      Dinner

                                   Time to Shop on Ben Yehuda or Emek Refaim (This will depend on

where we eat dinner)

Day 3 – Jerusalem and Surroundings

 

9:00am                       Yad Vashem

The premier Holocaust memorial museums in the world, and one of the most important sites for understanding the psyche of the modern Jewish people and modern state of Israel, as well as a place that will reveal to us just how little we understand about how G-d works. 

 

12:30pm                     Lunch at Mahane Yehuda Market

                                   Experience the sights, smells, and tastes of Jerusalem’s main market

 

                                   Walking Tour of Nachlaot

Wind through the alleyways of one of Jerusalem’s most unique neighborhoods, as we learn the stories of the people who once lived and still live here. 

 

3:00pm                       Kfar Etzion Tour and Museum

Learn the story of the Gush Etzion settlement bloc and the important role it played in the War of Independence. 

 

4:00pm                       Tour/Tasting at Gush Etzion Winery

 

5:00pm                       Dinner at Gavna in Gush Etzion

                                   A quaint little restaurant with a magnificent view and fabulous food.

 

                                   Return to Jerusalem for the night.

 

Day 4 – Judean Mountains and Foothills

 

10:00am                     Brunch at Sataf Goat Farm

We’ll have brunch at one of my favorite off-the-beaten track locations.  Tucked away in the mountains surrounding Jerusalem is a small goat farm with the best goat cheese in the country. 

12:00pm                     Tel Socho Overlook of Elah Valley

                                    See the place where David fought Goliath

 

1:00pm                       Har-el Overlook at Sha’ar Hagai

                                   Learn about the Battles for the Road to Jerusalem in 1948

 

2:00pm                       Haas Promenade / Overlook of Jerusalem

 

3:00pm                       Return to Hotel / Free Time / Prepare for Shabbat

 

 

Day 5 – Shabbat in Jerusalem

 

 

Day 6 – Judean Desert

7:30am                       Depart Jerusalem

 

9:00am                       Masada

What is the story of this nearly impregnable desert fortress that fell to the Romans in 74 AD?  Who were the people who lived here?  And why did it become such a prominent symbol in modern times?  We will answer all of these questions and more.  We will take the cable car up and down the mountain.

2:00 pm                      Dead Sea

The lowest place on earth, and what Pliny the Elder called one of the “three wonders of the land of Judea.” 

 

3:00 pm                      Depart for Jerusalem

Day 7 – The North

8:00am                       Depart Jerusalem

 

10:00am                     Caesarea

See the amazing ruins of this city built by King Herod to be the largest port in the Mediterranean.  Learn the stories associated with the city, and hear about the personalities that passed through this place.

                                   Lunch, followed by a wine and chocolate tasting at the Tishbi Winery

                                   Tour of the Aaronson House

 

4:00pm                       Atlit Detention Camp

Jews who survived WWII  and left Europe in its aftermath for Palestine  were not allowed into the land by the British.  Many of those who were caught were brought to this detention camp.  We’ll see the facilities, learn the stories associated with the place, and discuss how the Jews broke the British blockade and smuggled tens of thousands of Jewish refugees into Palestine. 

 

6:00pm                       Dinner in Druze Village of Sajur

 

                                   Overnight in Sfat or the area

 

Day 8 – The North

7:00am                       Birdwatching in the Hula Valley

Israel sits on the crossroads of 3 continents.  As a result, an estimated 500 million birds pass through here every year during migration season. 

 

10:00am                     Gamla National Park

Explore the site of the fierce battle described by Josephus during the Great Revolt against Rome. 

 

12:00pm                     Lunch

 

1:30pm                       Golan Heights Overlook

Jumping back into modern times, we’ll glance over into Syria and get an understanding of the modern geo-political realities facing the state of Israel.

 

2:30pm                       Tour of Sfat

Explore the city of the mystics and of the Kabalah.  See the same rolling mountains that the Rabbi Yitzchak Luria saw as he welcomed the Shabbat every week, and the same beautiful landscapes that inspired Rabbi Shlomo HaLevi Alkabetz to compose the famous prayer, Lecha Dodi.  In addition, we’ll browse through the artists’ quarter, with its wonderful art, jewelry, and shops.

Take the cable-car to explore the natural grottos at the Israeli-Lebanese border.

Learn the story of how the modern State of Israel gained independence in the place where it was declared on May 14, 1948.

In this interactive museum, we will learn about the Jewish underground and one of the elite units that fought for Israel’s independence. 

 

12:30pm                     Rabin Square

Learn about former Prime Minister Yitzchak Rabin z”l, and visit the memorial at the place where he was assassinated. 

 

1:00pm                       Lunch at Café Yafo

Stroll around one of the most ancient cities in the world, explored its markets, and learn its history.

Walk through some of the early neighborhoods of the first modern Jewish city, learning about its creation, growth, and the personalities who lived here.
