The old town of Trakai is found west of Vilnius nestled among hills, forests and lakes. This town was a cradle of the Lithuanian statehood, an important military and political centre, and the second capital of Lithuania. Today, Trakai, famous for its lovely landscape and the legendary Trakai Castle, attracts visitors offering refuge from a hectic city life, with calm walks around the beautiful city or boating trips on the numerous lakes. Trakai is also known for the Karaimes (a people speaking the Turkic language), who have lived there and kept their traditions going since the 14th century.
