This most ancient native Croatian city on the Adriatic is found in the very protected natural harbour, in the middle of the eastern coast of the Adriatic Sea. This is likely in the same spot where a few of the original Croatian settlers first set their eyes on the blue sea.
Sibenik's small winding streets, brick houses, staircases and the remains of the city walls create a romantic Mediterranean atmosphere. The St. Jacob's Cathedral is the most well known building in Sibenik. It was built over one hundred years and is testimony to the sacrifice, determination and belief of the generations of families of Sibenik.
By many things it stands out not only in Croatian architecture, but in European architecture in general. It is completely built of stone, not any other material was used. It is special in its courageous structure of stone slabs and ribs, with nothing binding it; it is also the only renaissance church with trefoil front facade; finally, it stands out because of the harmony of its architecture.
